Tank
Hound (mix breed)
Urgent: Last Day
Scheduled: March 3, 2026
Reason: Other
Intake Info: Tank (A2323593) has recently returned to our shelter. A good Samaritan found him running loose at a park wearing only a green rope leash and no collar. His registered microchip owner was contacted, however, no one has come forward to reclaim him. His first impound with our shelter was in November 2025. Medical: Tank is heartworm negative and up to date on vaccinations. HS-1. Behavior Observations: Tank has displayed concerning food-related resource guarding behaviors within the kennel environment. During feeding, once food was presented in his kennel, he began low growling and immediately lunged toward the kennel door, attempting to bite as the door was being secured. In a separate observation, Tank was standing at the kennel bars barking intensely. When offered a treat, he stopped barking, took the treat gently, and displayed a looser body posture with a wagging tail. However, when no additional treats were offered, the barking resumed at high intensity. When a food bowl containing kibble and treats was introduced, Tank growled, snarled, and lunged toward the gate. He fixated heavily on the food and attempted to paw and bite at the bowl, making safe placement of the food difficult. Due to behaviors concerns, the assessment was ended early for safety reasons. Staff Notes: During processing, Tank moved slowly but did well overall and allowed handling. He was noted as a possible resource guarder. A kennel technician later took Tank out for a walk. Upon approach, he appeared curious and sniffed through the bars. He responded to a ?sit? cue for a treat, allowed the handler to enter the kennel, and was easily loop-leashed. He was non-reactive to other dogs while exiting the kennel and walking through the building. Outside, he maintained a loose body, appeared playful, and responded to his name by jumping up excitedly. He allowed full-body petting and sat nicely for photos. Request to Rescues: Tank is a 3-year-old handsome boy who would benefit from placement with a rescue experienced in behavior modification, particularly for food-related resource guarding. His needs currently exceed what the shelter can safely manage, and he would benefit from consistent one-on-one training in a structured environment. Outside of feeding situations, Tank has shown he can be social, responsive, and eager to engage. With proper management and training, he has strong potential to become a loyal and loving companion.
