Rooney

Intake Info: Rooney (A2232211) is a handsome, young 2-year-old dog who has had a difficult start. He first came into our care after his owner, who was experiencing homelessness, was no longer able to care for him. During intake, Rooney displayed fearful behaviors when separated from his owner. He appeared shut down and jumpy to touch, though our Animal Care & Control officer was able to scan him by moving slowly. Recently, Rooney went to a foster home; upon return, the foster shared that he is a very sweet dog but can be challenging to walk due to being a young, strong boy. Medical: Rooney is fully processed, up to date on vaccines, and neutered. He recently completed treatment for kennel cough. During his stay, he was also treated for hair loss and for FAS related to the shelter environment. Volunteer Notes: Rooney is sweet, playful, and appears housebroken. During a recent spa-day treatment for his skin, volunteers noted that although he was initially shy to come out, he allowed all handling. He is a strong puller and would benefit from continued leash-walk training. He was gentle and cooperative in the tub. Behavior Notes: Rooney can present with a stiff gate greeting at first, but he is steerable and responsive. He has shown light social behaviors and has engaged in a mix of play styles?rough?rowdy, push?pull, and gentle/dainty?with both male and female dogs. When he became a little too pushy, play was simply paused, and he redirected well. He is making steady progress with muzzle acclimation, eagerly placing his nose into the muzzle for treats. He becomes tense when the main strap is secured, so the team is moving at his pace to keep the experience positive. Rooney knows sit, down, and come, is very food-motivated, enjoys running, and is housebroken. While he can be uncomfortable with restraint in unfamiliar situations, with patience he continues to build trust. Overall, Rooney is a sweet, energetic young dog who wants to connect and thrive with the right person. Request to Rescues: Rooney is a wonderful dog who has benefited from consistent work both in and out of playgroup. However, we have determined that the most appropriate and compassionate path forward is for him to leave the shelter environment. His FAS has been gradually worsening, and we no longer have the resources necessary to support his ongoing behavioral needs. We believe Rooney will have a far better opportunity to thrive in a rescue placement or rescue-affiliated foster home. Rooney urgently needs a rescue placement so he does not continue to decline.
