A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out?or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.? Trudy greeted the runner with a relaxed demeanor and was easy to leash and remove from the kennel. Once out Trudy quickly started to fence fight pull/lunge/bark/muzzle punch at the barrier and was difficult to steer. When the runner managed to steer her away from one kennel she immediately went after the next one. Trudy was difficult to walk through the kennels due to her barrier reactivity. Once in the catch pen she continued to be reactive at the barrier and had to be collared/leashed/muzzled away from the play yard. The play yard was adjusted with only a few helper dogs and Trudy was guided into the yard. Trudy displayed a neutral body, closed mouth, low tail, ears back, and a neutral gaze. She allowed the dogs to sniff her then became tense and appeared to challenge the dogs. She was corrected verbally by the handlers and stopped. She was given play bows and started to participate in play chase appearing more at ease. A few more dogs were trickled into the yard and Trudy continued to socialize and play. One of the dogs appeared to become submissive when playing and Trudy started a physical altercation. He required verbal corrections/shake can to be steered. She went back to playing with the other dogs. Another dog in the yard appeared ?soft? around Trudy and she loomed over appearing tense. She started another physical altercation with that dog and was difficult to steer. She remained focused on the dog afterward continuing to pull/lunge at the dog. She required multiple firm corrections and was shifted to the adjacent yard for alone time before being returned to her kennel. She continued to display barrier reactivity when being returned to her kennel. Trudy is recommended to be made available to rescue only (+KHOA barrier reactivity/predatory drive) medium energy level no other dogs required.
