Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.? Ted greeted the runner with a neutral body, neutral gaze, and a neutral tail. He was easy to leash and remove from the kennel, walked nicely on leash while bypassing the other kennels, and was easy to collar while allowing the runner to pet him. In the catch pen, his body was neutral, his gaze was neutral, and his tail was low. He entered the yard with a nervous demeanor, and avoided the other dogs when they tried to greet him. He snapped at the other dogs if they bumped him, or hovered near his face. Otherwise, he kept to himself as much as possible, occasionally soliciting petting from the handlers. He roamed the yard with a neutral body and a low tail. He did not engage in play with the other dogs, but was able to coexist in a small group of calm dogs with some monitoring from the handlers. Ted is defensive with the other dogs, has a low energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.? Ted was already in the yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessment. He was moved to the side yard, and given a few moments to decompress before the handler entered the yard. He approached the handler with a neutral body, soft eyes, a closed mouth, and a low tail. He allowed the handler to pet his head, neck, back, sides, and abdomen with no issues. The handler was able to check his ears and teeth, and touch his front paws with ease. When the handler touched his rear legs and tail, he quickly turned to stare at the handler with concerned eyes, but did not growl or try to bite. He was easy to handle throughout the assessment, and solicited petting once the assessment was completed. He was returned to his kennel with ease.
